For the midterm, you will focus on an observation of motivational processes and write about this observation in a minimum 5- to 7-page paper.
While watching the movie Cast Away (Hanks, Zemeckis, Starkey, & Rapke, 2000) on your own time, you will be observing (assuming, deducing, inferring, hypothesizing, or guessing) the motivational processes of the main character and then discussing your observations within literature about the motivations we have considered during individual classes.
When writing your paper, introduce the topic of human motives and include in the introductory section the goal (purpose, aim) of your paper. Next, under a suitable subheading, summarize what was the movie about (while properly referencing it according Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association [American Psychological Association {APA}, 2019]).
Then, based upon your observations, select specific assumed, inferred, hypothesized, deduced, or guessed motivations of the main character and discuss your observations within the published literature.
In the final and concluding paragraphs, include the following two reflection-based areas of learning: (a) specify meaningful connections you have made or emotional experiences you have had while watching the movie; (b) explicate your experiences while writing this paper.
It is reasonable to expect that during writing various sections of the paper you might find yourself switching between the first person voice (“I”) and a scholarly objective voice. Use your judgment for selection of a proper voice for particular sections of your work.
Conclude your paper by including cover page and giving it an appropriate title, by writing abstract, and by including list of references (these 3 pages do not count toward required number of pages).

– Discussion: Discuss your inferences (based upon observations and articulated in a form of assumptions, deductions, inferences, hypotheses, or guesses) regarding several different types of motivations that the main character in movie Cast Away (Hanks et al., 2000) might have had and which you inferring by his actions and behaviors. Consider the observed motivations in terms of concepts and theories found within the motivational science in psychology. (6 points)
– Conclusion: In the concluding paragraphs, reflect upon your work and note any personally meaningful connections you have made or emotional experiences you have had while watching the movie and (b) while writing your paper. (2 points)
