1. The Purpose of the Presentation. The purpose of this presentation is to analyze to the best your abilities 12-15 minutes of music. In analyzing your chosen music, you need to listen in detail for the elements of Form, Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Dynamics, Timbre, Texture and Culture. As this is a music class presentation write as if the music did not have words. Listen to your music as if it were purely instrumental. To gain an understanding of the music it is important that we understand the cultural aspects of the music in including the composer’s influences and possibly the performer’s influences. That is why we need biographies and composition histories. **This is a freshman level course. I will not be grading you like a music major or any upper division student. I expect you to do your best. I suspect that you will struggle a bit with your analysis. That is OK. If your best is not up to the standard I will help you make corrections until it is. Unless you have some musical background from the past you won’t be able to do a music major analysis. I know this is general education. Relax and do your best. I am here to help. Always remember the 8 elements as you analyze: Form, Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Dynamics, Timbre, Texture and Culture.
2. Choose 12-15 Minutes of Music. If your choice is a major 19th-century symphony you may need only two movements, however, if you are doing popular songs you will most likely need 3 to 5 songs. I suggest that you choose music by a single composer so that you only have to deal with the biography once. You may choose songs by different composers, remember, however, that you will need a biography for each. For each piece of music, you need your analysis, biographies (composer at least and preferably performers) and the history of the composition.
3. Biography. This is about 4 slides in length. For a written paper it would roughly be a two pages biography of your chosen musician. (12 point font – double spaced, 1 page is about 400 words) Items such as birth date, death date, influences, career, and production output of music are all important.
4. Composition History. Once you have chosen your 12-15 minutes of music you need to present a history of each of the song/compositions you have chosen. If you have chosen one work that is 12-15 minutes long then you will need to give a history of that work. If you have chosen 5 songs, then you will need to give a history of each of those songs. Items such as when written, when performed, recorded, publisher, influences, fellow musicians, album, etc., are all important. Write in the presenter’s notes, don’t just make a list. Traditionally speaking, most good composition histories have been 1/2 written page per song. (12 point font – double spaced, 1 page is about 400 words), however, content is much more important. (1 page) 4-6 slides.
5. Listening Guide.. The whole point of the entire project (biography, composition histories, etc.,) is about helping your audience hear the music you have chosen intently. That is the point. The biography is not what the project is about. It is about listening to the music. You only write the biography and histories so that people can better appreciate what they are listening to in the music. The listening guides are the most important part of the presentation. In preparation. I suggest you use the provided listening guide template. It will help organize your work.
6. For each of your compositions, you need to do a timed listening guide. (Written out it would be about six pages or text [12 point font, double spaced, about 400 words per page] over about 8-12 slides) You will most likely need to listen to your music about 2-3 hours and take notes on what you hear. Pay specific attention to the principle of FORM.
7. When preparing and writing the listening guide before you create the presentation, in the left column put the timings. Then describe in detail (Detail is important, one line descriptions do not work. Describe the music in detail) what is happening in the music at that time. You should have comments and timings at least every 30 seconds. Section 2 (Chapters 7-21) in your text, is full of excellent models. Focus your writing on Form, Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Dynamics, Timbre, and Texture. (The fundamental elements of music discussed in chapters 1-6)
8. Use Chapters 7-21 in the text as models.
9. You will need to do this for each piece of chosen music for a total 12-15 minutes of music.
10. Bibliography and References – No bibliography, no credit for the presentation.
11. Presentation
12. Make your presentation 15-20 slides, plus cover and bibliography pages. Remember that I really don’t count slides. It is the content that is important.
13. In the slides, you enter the concepts. Bullet-points. People don’t need to read prose on a slide. You are supposed to lecture the information with the concept bullet points being in the slides. Remember the 5X5 rule. No more than 5 bullet points of no more than 5 words per slide. People do not want to read on a slide what the presenter should be telling them.
14. Under the slides, there is a presenter’s notes section. This is where you put the detailed information that you are going to tell the class. You must write it out as if you were speaking. Even in the listening guide section, point out important concepts and put the timings and details in the notes below. If you were in class, what would you want to see? Put that in the slide. What details would you like to hear? Put that in the presenter’s notes below. Remember that I have outlined about 10 pages of text (12 point font – double spaced – about 400 words per page) for the presenter’s notes above. I am not going to count the words or the slides, but I do expect this kind of detail. You will need about 4,000 words total to be detailed enough. I give you a limit so you won’t overdo it.
15. Wallpapers, graphics, pictures, hyperlinks, etc., are all necessary for an attention grabbing presentation. do a search in Google images. in Google Images, click “Tools,” then click “Usage rights.” Click “Labeled for non-commercial reuse.” Any of the images there you can use. Remember to include your photos and graphics in your bibliography. I expect images in each slide to add interest for your audience.
