Paper #3: Analyzing the Context of which a Set of Arguments is Made – This is similar to the way the first paper was written. The biggest difference in approach here is that you get to choose your central or anchor text. Also, your syntheses should be more developed, the conversations between texts more specific and insightful (I am going to really push this aspect of the paper: remember that this comes, first, from a rigorous reading approach).
Prompt: Examine a group of texts that consider the complex topics of gender and identity from a variety of highly diverse viewpoints. You will be discussing how topics and arguments developed in these texts establish a context for understanding these topics in twenty-first-century America; to the point, how has our understanding evolved on a certain topic, based on the conversations between texts? Your success on this paper will be based on how well you develop these ideas/topics/arguments between texts (synthesis).
Consider how the major positions advanced in these texts relate to each other and evaluate their persuasiveness. (Learning Outcomes addressed: 1–3, 5–6). Again, this is Similar to Project 1.
Your paper will be evaluated on these 3 major points:
Your paper should be proofread and polished for a university-level academic essay. This pertains to grammar, syntax and diction – thoughtful use of the language. Your adherence to MLA formatting is part of this proofreading and polish. If you ignore this seemingly basic level of “Final draft” writing, the more interesting and developed parts of your paper (your analysis) will be undermined, sometimes drastically.
Your clear and insightful account of your key text. What are the author’s most relevant points, arguments, and evidence? How does the author construct the argument? This can be explained using your own language with insightful and active use of the text to back-up your observations and/or you can apply rhetorical analysis to the author’s argument. The bottom-line is your account should be clear and accurate. Stronger papers will be more insightful if the analysis works towards more inference and ambitious interpretation, which can benefit the reader. That’s the only person you should have in mind: an intelligent reader who is unfamiliar with the text.
Your syntheses of the primary or key text with 3 to 4 other Module readings should be clear, active and ambitious, working to develop important insight on these arguments. The use of the texts specifically is critical to these syntheses. Show the reader how these essays and arguments relate: think specifically of how a text Illustrates, Clarifies, Extends, Develops, Challenges or Complicates another text. Focused and developed connections (textually evidenced and explained carefully) will characterize strong B and A level work.
Your paper should have an introduction that clarifies the prompt and an overview of the discussion. You can introduce the readings in your introduction, but you can also introduce and focus on the key text here and wait to introduce the other sources in the synthesis portion of the paper. Keep the introduction clear and to the point. This is the same consideration you made in our first paper (Deresiewicz, et al.).
A brief but poignant conclusion providing some evaluative comments on the key text and some comments on the importance of this study can be a welcomed finish to this paper.
Your paper is to be 5-7 pages long. Please adhere to MLA format (double-spaced, one-inch margins, page numbers, etc.), include a Works Cited page (not considered in the required page count), and, again, edit and proofread carefully.
