Assignment:

  1. Short biography (2 paragraphs about this choreographer and their philosophy)
  2.  3 quotations and photograph of choreographer
  3. Minimum 2-minute dance composition based on quotes and photo. You can use someone to do it.
  4. Include proper citation of your sources for quotes and bios!!!

Create a short dance composition (at least 2 minutes long) about the choreographer you have chosen to research.  The composition is not based on the choreographies or movements of your choreographer, but rather on their actual portrait (photograph) and three quotations.

You will post the quotations, the bio, a copy of the photo, and a Youtube link to your dance on the Discussion Board forum labeled “Choreographer Portrait Assignment.”

The point is that the dance you create is your own physical interpretation of the choreographer’s philosophy, approach to dance, and their actual photographic portrait rather than an imitation of their choreography and style.  It is intended to be an exercise in:

  1. Research
  2. Critical thinking about a choreographer’s philosophy and approach to creating dances
  3. Your own creative process- using an image and movement philosophy as the source for your own embodied interpretation

I am looking forward to seeing the different interpretations.  Don’t worry, it is not about virtuosity or originality.  The point is the research, the thoughtfulness, and the creative interpretation.

There are many ways to approach choreography.  You can also think of structuring your dance like you would a 5 paragraph essay: Introduction, Theme 1 (paragraph 1 or first statement), Theme 2, Theme 3, and Conclusion.

You could also use the exercise we did with creating movement equivalents for words and then crafting the movement you come up with in interesting ways.

Some choreographic tools and things to keep in mind:

Tempo– very fast or very slow movement tends to be more interesting in composition than moderate movement that keeps the same pace.  Think about changing and varying the dynamics (the speed and energy of the different movements) and phrasing (how fast you do a particular movement).

Repetition– Repeating a phrase or a movement theme is a good way to open and close a piece or to return to a movement theme within a piece (the choreographic tool rondo is defined below.  I like to think of it like in a song when the structure is verse 1, chorus, verse 2, return to chorus, verse 3, return to chorus, etc.)

Choreographic tools from a Dance Terms Glossary:

Choreography The art of planning and arranging dance movements into a meaningful

whole; the process of building a composition; a finished dance work.

Choreographic Forms Structures that a choreographer uses in the creation of a dance

such as AB, ABA, rondo, canon, theme and variation, call and response, and narrative.

AB A two part compositional form with an A theme and a B theme. The binary form

consists of two distinct self-contained sections that share either a character or quality, i.e.,

the same tempo, movement quality, or style. AB A two part compositional form with an A theme and a B theme. The dual form consists of two distinct self-contained sections that share either a character or quality, i.e., the same tempo, movement quality, or style.

Rondo A choreographic form of three or more themes with an alternating return to the

main theme (ABACADA).

Theme Unifying or dominant idea in a movement pattern, sequence, or dance from which

variations may be developed.

Theme and Variation A choreographic form in which a dance phrase or section of a

dance is followed by subsequent phrases or sections that are variations of the original,

usually for the sake of variety.

Narrative A choreographic structure that follows a specific story line and intends to

convey specific information through that story.

Repetition Presentation of a theme or a portion of a theme a number of times for

emphasis or to gain form or interest. (It assists in making a specific rhythm increasingly

discernable or emphasizes significant movement patterns or themes.)

Climax Sequential arrangement to achieve a key statement or intensity; the portion of the

composition given primary emphasis or representing culmination; the most intense or

highest point in the development or resolution of choreography.

Collage A choreographic form that consists of a series of movement phrases that are

often unrelated but have been brought together to create a single dance with a beginning,

middle, and end.

Creative Process The logical progression in the making of dance; choose topic, research

the topic, identify important aspects of the topic, devise problems to be solved, ask

questions, solve problems and produce material, design artwork, self-evaluate, revise, get

and use feedback from performance (concept, investigation, exploration, selection,

development, refinement, exhibition).

Contrast Introduction of a theme or pattern different than the original that differs in a way

that can serve to distinguish or intensify meaning.

Elements of Dance The components present in all movement: body, space, time and

energy.

Energy The amount and kind of force applied to movement.

Locomotor Movement Movement through space involving a change in location. A

moving base involving a progressive relocation of the body in space. (The basic locomotor steps are walk, run, leap, hop, jump; irregular rhythmic combinations are skip, slide, and gallop.)

Non-Locomotor Movement Movement occurring above a stationary base; movement of

the body around its own axis (Also called axial movement, it includes bending, stretching,

pushing, pulling, bouncing, swinging, shaking, and twisting.)
